Why Children Can Suffer From Hypertension Too

By Sean Davids

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, has long been considered a grown up issue, with an increased prevalence the older people get. However, with an increasing number of children now suffering from hypertension, a great deal of importance is being paid to this issue. One percent of children below the age of 12 and up to 6% of teenagers suffer from this problem, as evidenced by a number of studies. The definition of hypertension in children is defined as having blood pressure that is higher than 95% of the children of the same age group, race and gender. It is crucial to the nation's health that we learn why some kids suffer from high blood pressure.

It's well known that U.S. citizens on the whole are growing more overweight. That this situation is not confined to adults and can affect even children is a factor that is sometimes ignored. One-third of the child population of this nation belong in the obese category, which is a highly disturbing statistic. And this is the primary cause of hypertension in children.

There are ongoing studies on the link between overweight and high blood pressure, but we certainly know without doubt that such a link exists both in kids and in grownups. And this is the one factor that can be easily controlled without the need for any medical intervention. If children are encouraged to spend more time outdoors, their natural energy will cause them to indulge in physical activity that will burn up the extra calories. It will do a lot towards eliminating a key hypertension factor in kids.

Absence of physical activity or exercise is not always the sole reason for being overweight, however. One reason for obesity and hypertension in children may be due to genetics. Children of parents affected with illnesses such as obesity or diabetes should be tested for the presence of any such genetic or hormonal disorders and should be treated immediately.

Another reason for obesity and a major cause of hypertension in children is bad food habits. One of the worst eating habits for children is excessive consumption of junk food. Apart from a natural predisposition for fast food, locations serving this type of food are typically common teen hangouts. Once in the premises, their consumption of this unhealthy food tends to rise dramatically.

The causes of hypertension in children can also include a number of medical conditions that aren't always obvious. These disorders include sleep apnea, lupus, kidney problems and glandular disorders. Children may also overeat due to psychological issues. If a child has hypertension, it's essential to talk to a physician, even if the obvious cause appears to be obesity. Children may also have hypertension for other reasons which need to be looked at. - 31820

Sleep Apnea Symptoms Should Not Be Ignored

By Chester Umber

There is a secret illness that is quietly sweeping the country. This illness is very hard to detect, and if left untreated can cause a host of problems and can cost thousands of dollars in lost productivity and even endanger lives. The problem is sleep apnea. More and more people are starting to realize that they may suffer from this condition.

Sleep apnea has only come into the public consciousness fairly recently. Luckily, every year there is more and more money being spent on sleep centers and other research efforts to combat this condition. However advanced the research gets, the problem of discovery lies squarely on the face of the patient.

This can be a very hard condition to have. There is no blood scan, or collection of symptoms that point to sleep apnea and only sleep apnea. The reason this is such a hard thing to pin down is because apnea symptoms are often thought to be normal, everyday ailments that come with normal, everyday life.

So what are the symptoms? The basic indication of sleep apnea is stopping breathing during the night, for many reasons. Many times you'll wake up, and fall back asleep several times, but not remember in the morning. This can lead to headaches, drowsiness and inability to concentrate. Many times these symptoms are overlooked as they happen quite naturally anyway.

So can you be sure? The simplest way is to record yourself while sleeping, or ask your partner if you make any noises like you are stopping breathing. The more data you collect, the easier it will be for your doctor to figure out what to do.

Once you understand the symptoms, and learn to collect the appropriate data, you can be much more confident of being able to treat your sleep apnea. - 31820

Sleep Apnea Symptoms Can Be Harder To Diagnose Than You Believe

By Chester Umber

So last week I had to go with my girlfriend to this cooking class she is taking. She is preparing to enter into culinary school, and wanted to get some preliminary training. So being the good boyfriend that I am, I went along to support her.

The problem was when I started falling asleep while the lady was giving the beginning instructions. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't keep my eyes opened. Which seemed strange because I went to bed the same time as always the night before, and woke up the same time on that day.

Her dad for the longest time had this problem when she was a kid. He would always snore, keeping the whole house awake. Finally her mom convinced him to go see a doctor about it, and it turned out he had sleep apnea. Snoring is one sleep apnea symptom. The worst part is that people that snore usually don't know that they snore. It takes some courage to confront them with this.

Some of the common symptoms are waking up several times during the night for no reason, excessive snoring, headaches during the day, and feeling tired when you are bored. If you get enough sleep, when you are bored, you should just be bored, and not tired. This is why my girlfriend was worried.

My girlfriend was concerned because I was so tired even though I thought I spent the whole night sleeping the night before. We don't sleep together, so she doesn't know if I snore or not. We went to the doctor to get me checked out. One of the big sleep apnea symptoms is feeling tired when you are bored, even though you think you've gotten a good nights sleep the night before.

The doctor told me it was too early to tell. He suggested I pay close attention to my feelings and my sleep the next few days, and to look out for symptoms like daytime headaches, and waking up during the night for no reason. Then he can figure out an appropriate treatment. - 31820

Following the Atkins Diet

By Michael James

The popular name for the 'Atkins Nutritional Approach' is the 'Atkins Diet', which was the brainchild of Doctor Robert Atkins. He had put on a lot of weight while in medical school and after reading about a certain diet in the medical journal, he decided to improve it and release it under his own name.

Atkins, in his Atkins Diet, stated that he believed that the prevailing theories about weight gain were all wrong. First, he dismissed the idea that saturated fats were bad; instead he said it was it was carbohydrates that led to the weight problems Americans have. Atkins held that our obsession with fat actually worsened the problem. He pointed to all the low-fat foods that were high in carbohydrates, which meant that people on a diet often ate foods that were worse for them than what they normally ate.

The Atkins diet shifts the focus. Atkins said that by cutting out carbohydrates, people would burn stored body fats. And, of course, if you lose the fat, you lose the weight. He said it was not just a matter of eating less. Atkins postulated that your diet could actually help you burn calories and The Atkins Diet supposedly burned more calories than were consumed everyday. But the claims were contested.

Dr. Atkins also promulgated the positive influence that his diet could have on suffers of type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a disease you get early in life, but type 2 is often closely associated with diet and surplus body weight. So, it should follow that any diet that helps decrease weight, will help people with Type 2 diabetes. The Atkins diet is low in carbohydrates, which ought to be avoided with type 2 diabetes regardless of the caloric intake, so because of this aspect of the diet, Atkins claimed that those who suffer type 2 diabetes would no longer need medication such as insulin. In general, doctors disagree with Atkins on this point, although they do agree, however, that a lower carbohydrate intake helps control Type 2 diabetes, but there is no proof that carbohydrates cause diabetes.

What are the steps one has to take to follow the Atkins diet? It is followed in four phases - Induction; On-Going Weight loss, Pre-maintenance and Lifetime Maintenance. Here is an overview of the most important phase - The Induction Phase.

The Induction phase is the most difficult phase of the Atkins diet. Atkins is flexible about the time period " but recommends it lasts for two weeks. During this phase carbohydrates are severely curtailed " you can only consume up to 20 grams per day. The goal is to enter a fat burning metabolic phase called ketosis when the body, starved of glucose, will start converting stored fat into fatty acids needed to power the body. Weight loss during this phase can be extreme " some Atkins followers reported losses of 5-10 pounds a week or more.

The purposes of the final three phases in the Atkins diet are to learn the ideal carbohydrate levels for the next two phases, which are continued weight loss and weight maintenance. Many millions of people are still losing the weight they want to on the Atkins Diet " but be aware of the risks of taking in too much cholesterol and fat. - 31820

Am I Gaining Weight Due To My Blood Pressure Medicine?

By Christian Goodman

Now is the time of year where it is definitely hard to resist temptation to overindulge in food. For many of my clients however, they have a weight concern all year round due to their high blood pressure (hypertension) medication.

All high blood pressure medications are prescription medicines and should be respected as the potentially dangerous drugs that they are.

The following are the side effects caused by the high blood pressure medications. They are marked, weight gain, fluid retention, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, (due to vomiting and diarrhea most likely), skin rashes, extreme tiredness, weakness, leg cramps, constipation, bleeding gums, frequent urination (especially at night), low potassium, dry mouth, vertigo (dizziness), headache, excessive hair growth, insomnia, nightmares, cold hands and feed and sensitivity to sunlight.

Because of fluid retention, lethargy, lack of sleep (we compensate by gaining lost energy from food) and depression, it's no wonder that people reduce or stop exercising and quite frequently turn to food for comfort. What comes next? We gain weight of course.

While some only gain a few pounds, many patients have reported gaining in excess of a hundred pounds over the course of a year! This would, in turn put that person in the obesity category, if he or she weren't already there, which in turn, would lead to a new risk factor for high blood pressure.

Other serious side effects include: gout, increased blood sugar (especially bad for diabetics), low blood pressure, slow heart beat, fast heart beat, birth defects and death in fetuses of pregnant women, erectile dysfunction, depression, and get this - risk of heart attack!

Apart from hypertension the patient now carries the risk of developing diabetes, osteoarthritis, metabolic syndrome and high cholesterol.

Weight gain and other related ones will make you depresses if high blood pressure doesn't.

When they get depressed the patient will tend to take very little high blood pressure medication or completely stops taking it. It is not advised to stop taking medicines that is prescribed without the consultation of the physician.

Believe me when I say I understand how difficult it can be to convince a physician that medicine isn't the best option for you. If you are currently taking medicine for high blood pressure, try adding a few natural approaches to lower your blood pressure in order to convince your doctor that you can reduce or eliminate the medicine?

A few ways for you to help lower blood pressure without medication include: Stop smoking, avoid over indulging in alcohol, maintain a healthy weight, reduce sodium in the diet and reduce stress.

My high blood pressure program is also highly recommended. It works and it is easy to start and easy to maintain consistently.

If weight loss is your concern, I also recommend my Weight Loss Breeze program. The simple to do exercises have proven results!

Essential Hypertension - The Essential or Primary Hypertension Facts

By Jason Falson

With essential hypertension no cause is examined because essential hypertension has no underlying causes. This type of hypertension occurs basically out of nowhere and without being provoked, it just happens. Another name for essential hypertension is primary hypertension. This is because it is seen as its own primary cause.

How To Control It

Usually a patient's treatment for essential hypertension will include medication. This not to say such things as alcohol consumption and weight control are ignored, but since these things by definition are not causes for essential hypertension, usually it will take hypertension medication to control it. Still, essential hypertension can be controlled and so, it is not seen as a serious ailment so long as it is controlled without some unusual complication.

The Overall View

One school of thought is primary hypertension actually does have an underlying cause but the medical profession has yet to discover what it could be. The reason this hypothesis is viable is that some patients will respond to the same treatment that other patients may not benefit from at all. This leads to the conclusion patient-A may, indeed have a truly primary hypertension while patient-B still has an undiscovered underlying problem.

In the end, a medical professional will come up with a plan that will control the hypertension and allow the patient to lead a normal life. Sometimes however, finding the treatment will require a little trial and error.

As in all cases of hypertension, the proper medication must be taken everyday. Blood pressure medication is constructed in such a way it is only effective when taken daily and may not be useful at all if some daily dosages are skipped.

Not only should the patient avoid missing his/her daily dosage of blood pressure medication, but he/she must take it at the same time everyday. This is because hypertension medication is not as effective even if it is just missed on rare occasions. Also, it loses its effectiveness if it is not taken at consistent intervals. This means following the doctor's orders includes what part of the day the medication should be taken.

Monitor Your Medication's Effect

Often times any type of medication will need to be altered. This is part of the normal procedure followed for coming to the conclusion of what is the right treatment for any particular individual. So, whenever a patient is not feeling well in the early stages of a treatment for high blood pressure he/she should let the doctor know. The patient should do so because the dosage or the medication itself may need to be changed.

Young people, those in their twenties and teenagers are diagnosed more often diagnosed with essential hypertension than people who are over thirty. Because aging can often exacerbate the chances hypertension will inflict a person and essential hypertension has no true underlying cause, aging by definition, could do nothing to bring essential hypertension on.

Because hypertension had not been discovered too many generations ago, a very popular hypothesis at this point in time is that essential hypertension is genetic. Of course, it will have to be studied for a longer period of time before a conclusion as to whether or not it is inherited can be made. - 31820

Pregnancy Cause Of Hypertension

By Christian Goodman

I travel often, in fact more often than not. It seems that I see women everywhere scurrying through their daily lives, the same as me. But these women are carrying a new life. A little person completely dependent upon them for survival - not the same as me! Pregnancy amazes me.

Unfortunately for some, pregnancy does not allow for a "normal" daily life. Certain conditions such as Pregnancy Induced Hypertension can create emotional as well as serious physical concerns.

Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH) also sometimes referred to as preeclampsia or toxemia occurs in about 5 to 10 percent of pregnancies. Chronic hypertension varies from PIH in that it is normally present prior to pregnancy.

Baby and mother both face a grave threat by both conditions. There are also information of gestational high blood pressure that do not mostly comes with the same risks, but can intensify the probability of the mother later developing PIH.

Is high blood pressure a problem during pregnancy?

High blood pressure blocks the blood flow to many systems in the body. As there is a shortage of blood flow to all parts of the body the baby gets affected.

The restricted blood flow can cause the fetus to abrupt from the placenta prematurely (placental abruption.) The baby can also be underweight or suffer a lack of proper development due to the lack of nutrients.

The worst case scenario with PIH untreated is it can be fatal to both the mother and the baby.

Symptoms of Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (not a complete list):

high blood pressure blurred vision extreme nausea edema or swelling more than trace amounts of protein in the urine present

It is mostly confirmed when more than two symptoms are present. Presence of a single system does not mean the presence of PIH.

These systems may result in regular trips to the doctor for monitoring to determine if PIH has developed is or likely to develop.

Treatment

The baby may not be fully developed to live a life outside the womb when left. The best cure for mother is having the baby. But the same do not apply for the baby.

To reduce the blood pressure according to severity of cases there are different degrees of bed rest available. Adequate rest is the best treatment for PIH during pregnancy. Even months and weeks are spent lying by bed. You can even see some women lying on their left side. Doctors generally advice those females only to get up when they go for bathroom or when they feel like eating.

Many father's blood pressure have lifted due to this stress and tension during the pregnancy period. Mother is not the only one affected by the complication due to pregnancy but partner or father who loves her a lot is also affected.

Pre-natal care should be taken seriously when you are pregnant. You can sure that almost all the pregnancies finish in happy and healthy babies, mom's and dad's. To reduce your blood pressure to normal levels or to manageable levels you should avoid tension and stress in life wherever possible.

Focused relaxation and better bed rest is the focus of my blood pressure program for pregnant ladies. The good thing is it will even help the loved ones from stress and tension due to teh complication arises in pregnancy.

Feeling Stressed? Beware Of Blood Pressure Problems!

By Andrew John

Stress is known to activate "fight-or-run" mechanisms in your body, including increased heartbeat rate and blood pressure to prepare our bodies to incoming danger. This does nothing wrong if happens once a month, but if you suffer from long-time stress, blood pressure level will be increased - permanently. And such situation is both unnatural and dangerous for even the youngest.

High blood pressure can lead to major health problems, so you have to cope with your stress without hesitation and waiting "for better times". Try to think about what stresses you and whether those things are really that important to risk your whole life by being worried about them. Then talk with your friend or family member about what stresses you most. It is always easier to find a workable solution by discussing the problem with someone close that coping with everything yourself.

You can also ask your family doctor for a piece of advice. First, he knows a lot of tips and tricks (ones that really work) that may help you cope with stress. Then, he is able to give you prescription-only pills that will allow you to calm down and increase your chances for finding and coping with the source of your problems.

If you hope to impregnate your life against stress, you have to apply another way of thinking: instead of thinking about negatives and be worried about even the smallest things, you have to keep your mind on the target and be a little more relaxed about the details. This is not about right or wrong, adopting objective or subjective look at the situation. It is about you are going to live happily until you're eighty or have a heart attack in your thirties.

Life isn't long enough to spend more than a day worrying about something. If you let yourself to be stressed and do nothing about it, your life is as good as gone. You have to relax a bit from time to time, and thing about the greater picture and your role in it. Then, all the details that make you down will no longer be as important as you think now. If only you could take them easy, your stress would vanish in a blink of an eye. - 31820

High Fructose Corn Syrup Causes High Blood Pressure

By Christian Goodman

WebMD recently reported that high fructose corn syrup in soft drinks can drive up your blood pressure, even if you're otherwise healthy, according to a new study from the University of Colorado Denver Health Sciences Center in Aurora, Colorado.

A researcher named Diana Jalal, MD has said "High fructose intake is linked to high blood pressure,".

The amount of soda that it takes to cause you high blood pressure is two and half sugary soft drink per day. This is said by researcher Jalal

The study examined 4,528 adults, all age 18 or older, who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2003 and 2006. None of the participants had a history of high blood pressure. Participants were surveyed about diet, and fructose intake was estimated based on answers about consumption of soft drinks, fruit juices, candy, and other types of foods. The researchers did not include the natural fructose from fruits in this study. Natural fructose is not harmful because other substances (like antioxidants) in whole fruits counteract any harmful effects. The study found that the median fructose intake was 74 grams per day - approximately 2.5 sugary soft drinks a day.

The researchers controlled for factors like age, activity levels, caloric intake, and salt intake, and they still found an association between high fructose intake and high blood pressure. Participants who had a daily fructose intake of 74 grams or more had a 36 higher risk of having high blood pressure.

Dr Jalal, MD elaborated this by saying "We know that fructose has the potential to reduce nitric oxide production within the blood vessels,". "Nitric oxide relaxes the vessel and is supposed to lower blood pressure. Fructose reduces the production of nitric oxide and makes it difficult for the vessels to relax and dilate."

Kidney eliminates very less salt when the uric acid increase in the blood. All this likes of increase in blood pressure, kidney eliminating less salt is caused by by fructose.

"It's important to remember that this is an abstract presented at a scientific meeting. It is not a published, peer-reviewed paper where the study, the data and the results and conclusions have undergone the rigors of peer review. There is nothing unique about soft drinks and/or high fructose corn syrup when it comes to risk for high blood pressure." This has been commented by Maureen storey from the American Beverage Association.

Fructose is a type of sugar naturally present in fruits. Despite the comment from the beverage association, several studies suggest that refined fructose products, such as high fructose corn syrup, do indeed present unique health problems. Another recent study found that many samples of high fructose corn syrup on the market are contaminated with mercury!

Most of these foods including soft drinking just brings in empty calories. You will see immediate benefits once you stop drinking soft drinks. IF you are an addict for soft drinks then you can search for soft drinks that is still made with natural sugar to avoid intake of fructose corn syrup. Even though the research is still ongoing at present the best thing to do is to avoid refined fructose altogether to reduce the risk of getting high blood pressure. In this case the products you need to avoid are soft drinks, fruit juices, baked goods, and candies.

In general, you should try to avoid all artificial, processed foods. Opt for natural foods, and eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. If you're at risk for high blood pressure or have high blood pressure, you should also exercise regularly. Think of exercise as your medicine! But exercise doesn't have to be strenuous. It can be relatively easy. To learn more about how you can reduce your stress levels and lower your blood pressure naturally, see this set of easy high blood pressure exercises.

Health Benefits of Spinach - It's a Super Food for Certain!

By Christian Goodman

"Eat your spinach so you can be strong like Popeye!" While still a child, I couldn't quite put my finger on it but now as an adult, I understand - my mother and the cartoon creator were part of a propaganda conspiracy towards children.

What I also didn't realize then is just how amazing the health benefits of spinach are. Spinach is at the top of the super foods list for a reason.

Just take a look at all of the nutrients provided in spinach: vitamin K, vitamin A, folate, magnesium, manganese, Vitamin C, iron, vitamin B2 (riboflavin), potassium, calcium, vitamin E, dietary fiber, folic acid, carotenoids, lutein, omega 3 fatty acids, protein, vitamin B1 (thiamin), vitamin B3 (niacin), phosphorus, zinc and the list goes on!

The following vitamins and nutrients have been recognized long back that they have the power to fight against cancer, especially lung, breast and colon cancers. We shall start with vitamins A, C, folic acid, dietary fiber and magnesium and see why these are important to health.

Before most women even realize that they are pregnant that is in the first two weeks of pregnancy some birth deficiencies do happen. These deficiencies are promptly prevented by folic acid. This is very important as half of the pregnancies around the world are unprepared.

Vitamin A and C are also excellent antioxidants. They actually help prevent the ability of cholesterol to stick to artery walls, which allows for better blood and oxygen flow to the major organs including the heart and brain, thus preventing heart attacks and stroke.

Migraine attacks can also be avoided by a component called riboflavin in spinach. Cataracts can be prevented by a substance called Lutein and this can be found in spinach. There is abundant calcium in spinach and this helps to prevent against osteoporosis by increasing bone strength.

A recent study has shown that ingesting 3 servings of dark leafy greens like spinach (kale, collards, Swiss chard, turnip greens and bok choy are also nutrient rich like spinach) per day helped ward of age related memory loss and mental decline by up to 40%!

At only 40 calories per cup (uncooked), and with more than twice the fiber than regular lettuce, this is a salad which will fill you up. Weight loss and toned muscles can be achieved by the iron content in spinach. This will give more energy and lead to more physical activities.

Spinach is full of flavor when cooked and can be added to foods for taste. Unlike the cartoon character Popeye spinach is best eaten uncooked. This will retrieve the nutrients in spinach.

To fulfill the dietary need, spinach can be added to Pasta dishes, lasagna and soups

I can recommend my Blood Pressure program and my Weight Loss Breeze program. If you have any concerns about your health apart from adding spinach to you diet. These programs are easy to follow, more importantly it work and it's all natural.

High Blood Pressure And Potassium Deficiency

By Christian Goodman

Almost all people know that high blood pressure can be caused by high sodium. But how many people know high blood pressure can also caused by low potassium? The effects of sodium is blunted by potassium and this helps the body to normalize blood pressure.

Frank K. Wood says "When it comes to lowering blood pressure, potassium packs a powerful punch," in Natural Cures and Gentle Medicines That Work Better Than Dangerous Drugs or Risky Surgery. "Scientists began studying the effects of potassium on high blood pressure as early as 1928. Now a major study of 300 nurses shows that potassium can lower your blood pressure even if it's in the normal range. Good sources of potassium are dried apricots, avocados, dried figs, acorn squash, baked potatoes, kidney beans, cantaloupe, citrus fruits, and bananas. You can also buy potassium supplements. If you're taking a diuretic, your body is getting rid of potassium along with fluid."

Dr. Stephen T. Sinatra, MD, in A Cardiologist's Prescription for Optimum Health explains "Since potassium is necessary to the healthy functioning of nerves, cells, and membranes, it is an important electrolyte to monitor," "Low potassium is a major cause of cardiac arrhythmia; diuretics for the treatment of high blood pressure or congestive heart failure may interfere with potassium absorption and excretion. Although potassium supplementation is usually not necessary, individuals on diuretics or laxatives or who have excessive diarrhea may require extra potassium."

"Many population studies have found links between low potassium intakes and an increased risk of high blood pressure and death from stroke. Increasing the amount of potassium-rich foods in the diet can lead to a reduction in high blood pressure. The ratio of sodium to potassium in the diet appears to play an important role in the development of high blood pressure. The typical Western diet is low in potassium relative to sodium." this has been pointed out by Nicola Reavley about the role played by potassium in controlling high blood pressure in the New Encyclopedia of Vitamins, Minerals, Supplements and Herbs.

The best way to get more potassium in your diet is to eat more potassium-rich foods such as apples, apricots, bananas, broccoli, carrots, lima beans, oranges, potatoes, prunes, spinach, squash, and watermelon.

It seems foods that contain high potassium is suppose to be vegetables and fruits. It is always better to avoid processed food that are rich in sodium while eating fruits and vegetables. A large amount of sodium can be found in a can of soup. It is always advised to read food labels.

Increasing the intake of fiber and reducing the food based on fat and cholesterol will also lower your blood pressure. Blood pressure can be lowered naturally by eating more fruits and vegetables and less processed food.

People who have high blood pressure should follow a regular exercise routine. You need not to hit gym. Alternatively you can start a simple exercise program in your home. This will actually lower blood pressure.

The Atkins Grapefruit Diet

By Joy Mitchell

The Atkins Grapefruit diet is a diet plan, not supported by the estate of Dr. Atkins, that plays on the popularity of the grapefruit diet and the Atkins diet name. A closer inspection of this diet shows that it may not be all it claims to be.

First of all, it's pretty difficult to find information on the Atkins grapefruit diet plan. Smart people know that when someone is perpetrating a deception, or a con, they will usually gloss over facts. This is what the Atkins grapefruit diet seems to do in an attempt to persuade people to associate it with two supposedly effective diets.

Is the Atkins Grapefruit Diet part of the Atkins Diet or endorsed by the firm of the late Dr. Atkins? The answer is no, not only is there no mention of the Atkins Grapefruit Diet on the Atkins web site, but there is no fruit of any kind mentioned in the list of permitted foods in the Atkins diet Induction phase.

The induction phase includes the following foods:

Fish of any species; any fowl such as turkey and chicken; any shellfish; any meat such as beef or pork; eggs cooked in any style, including fried; cheese; vegetables; herbs and spices; fats and oils; low carbohydrate beverages, including diet soft drinks.

Do you notice something? No fruit is on that list. Later phases of the Atkins diet do recommend limited amounts of fruits such as cantaloupe, strawberries and even lemon juice, and the pre-maintenance and maintenance phases even specifically permit small amounts of grapefruit. But when compared to the amount of Grapefruit recommended on the Atkins Grapefruit Diet, once more there is a disagreement.

The Atkins Grapefruit Diet recommends a cup of grapefruit juice or a cup of grapefruit sections, with 8 and 18 carbs respectively. Even the most generous phases of the Atkins diet recommends limiting grapefruit intake to below 8 carbs per day. That's a direct contradiction of one diet with the other.

Most reasonable people would inspect the Atkins website itself the moment they heard about the Atkins Grapefruit Diet. When they saw no mention of that diet on the site, a red light would go off and an alarm bell would ring.

Generally speaking, you should remember this: any diet that relies too much on one food, such as grapefruit on a grapefruit diet, is unhealthy for any but very short periods of time. The Atkins Grapefruit Diet is nothing to do with the Atkins diet, and may interfere with the efficacy of the Atkins diet in its early phases. - 31820

Blood Pressure Can Be Lowered Naturally By Eating Garlic

By Christian Goodman

Blood pressure can be lowered naturally by eating garlic. A recent study at the University of Alabama (UAB) shows that the protective effect of garlic is related to the amount of polysulfides in garlic. Garlic compounds known as polysulfides interact with red blood cells to produce hydrogen sulfide, which relaxes blood vessels.

Using fresh garlic, the UAB researchers found that hydrogen sulfide production from garlic could cause up to a 72 percent blood vessel relaxation in the arteries of rats. Relaxing the blood vessels is a major step in lowering blood pressure.

It is very well explained by lead researcher David Kraus Ph.D. "When these garlic compounds are metabolized to hydrogen sulfide in the vascular system, the hydrogen sulfide targets membrane channels and causes smooth muscle cells to relax. So a garlic-rich diet has many good effects, and hydrogen sulfide may be the common mediator,".

Oxidative damage to the cells is prevented by hydrogen sulfide this is how the researchers think. Hydrogen Sulfide often protects the damages in cells and tissues caused at the time of heart attack. This has been found by a separate study conducted by Albert Einstein College of Medical.

"The role of garlic compounds in preventing platelet aggregation, which can trigger a heart attack or stroke, and in limiting cancer growth and the progression of several diseases is well documented," Kraus said.

Platelet aggregation allows blood coagulation (the thickening of blood when one is cut, for example), but too much aggregation cat lead to blood clots. Platelet aggregation contributes to the buildup of fatty plaques on artery walls. Garlic prevents platelet aggregation and therefore prevents the buildup of fatty plaques. These fatty plaque deposits effectively increase the size of blood vessels, which increases blood pressure. Blood clots can also result in stroke and heart attack.

Too keep ones heart healthy and to maintain the levels of hydrogen sulfide one should regularly eat garlic. Hydrogen sulfide is produced by the body naturally, as the body starts to get aged the production of hydrogen sulfide decreases.

Platelet aggregation can also be prevented by onions and this will naturally lower blood pressure. Garlic and onion bothe comes from the allium family.

The following sentence shows that onion has the substance to neutralize the effect of a high fat meal on platelet aggregation. Platelets combined together is a quick manner after a no onion hi fat meal when compared to meal containing hi fat with onions. This has been proved by a study made by Queen Elizabeth College of London University.

Eat garlic regularly to lower blood pressure naturally if you are suffering from high blood pressure. You can just add a crushed garlic to pasta sauces, soups, vegetables, and meats actually it's very easy to cook. Any meal can be made yummy by the flavor of garlic.

Alternative you can lower blood pressure through physical exercise apart from eating garlic. Relaxation exercises like meditation and yoga do come in handy. If you are suffering from high blood pressure then walking is the best exercise you can get. You can try walking for 30 minutes 5 days a week.

Drug Free Lower Blood Pressure Is Offered By Implant Device

By Christian Goodman

Blood pressure can be lowered without the use of drugs by implant it will in the size of a cell phone. Whenever the blood pressure rises it sends signals to the brain through the carotid arteries in the neck. After getting these signals the brain signals the body to lower blood pressure. The implant works like a pacemaker and it is fixed in the chest.

From 2005 the implants are available in the market. This device was surgically implanted in the chest of Annette Lawrence. In an interview she said "Before I couldn't even get out of bed. I couldn't really do anything."

Lawrence was only 37 when she had the device implanted. Her vascular surgeon, Dr. Karl Illig of the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York, said, "She constantly had blood pressure up in the 200s The device is basically like a pacemaker. That's the best way to look at it."

As the device sends electrical impulses to the brain through the carotid artery, Dr. Illig explained, "that electrical signal is then sent up the nerves into the brain telling the brain, 'Ah ha! Your blood pressure is too high.'"

When the brain gets these signals it intimates the body to decrease the heart rate, open the blood vessels to bring down the blood pressure and to release the fluid from the kidney.

Dr. Illiig said Blood Pressure gets too high, but it is not sensed by the brain so it's just a kick start for the brain to order the heart.

Lawrence's blood pressure is 175/104 when the device is turned off. Whne the device is turned on the blood pressure immediately drops to normal 143/86. She said, "Since I had this procedure done, boy I tell you, I've got so much energy. I'm ready to keep up with [my grandson]."

The implant is surgically inserted under the skin near the collarbone. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes two to three hours. Two wires run from the cell-phone-sized device to the left and right carotid arteries in the neck. This device is only for patients who are unable to tolerate medication - those who have tried and failed all medical approaches.

The best way to avoid medication and surgery is through healthy lifestyle choices. Regular exercise and a nutritious diet can prevent the need for high blood pressure medication. High blood pressure, or hypertension, can be naturally lowered by losing weight, exercising regularly, lowering stress levels, eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, avoiding smoking, and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption (more than 1 drink a day for women and 2 for men).

To lower blood pressure one should exercise regularly. Apart from reducing stress levels regular exercise also reduces the hardening of the arteries. The main factor for high blood pressure is hardened arteries and blocked arteries.

What You Should Know About High Blood Pressure Medications

By Sean Davids

High blood pressure is a widespread problem in the United States, but it is likewise a serious one. High blood pressure is a risk factor for concerns like heart attack, stroke and heart disease. When a person is confirmed to have hypertension, a physician's first goal is to reduce the blood pressure to the safe range so additional strain on the cardiovascular system does not occur.

In many instances, the patient is put on a particular diet and fitness routine for hypertension control. But many patients also require pharmaceuticals to keep their blood pressure under control. Here is a look at a few of the most regularly recommended high blood pressure drugs utilized for this objective.

Diuretics: Among the most typical high blood pressure medicines first offered is often a water pill or diuretic. These medications come in commercial names like Zaroxolyn and Esidrix and work by getting rid of excess water and sodium from the blood. The surplus is expelled from your system by way of urination, which is why folks on this drug often need to urinate more frequently. By getting rid of the excess from the bloodstream, the heart can pump it throughout the body more effectively without excessive impact on this important organ.

Beta Blockers and ACE Inhibitors: These high blood pressure drugs might be prescribed if diuretics aren't effective or they can be used in combination with a diuretic for better results. In many cases, these drugs might also be the first line of protection against high blood pressure. These drugs work by increasing blood flow through the blood vessels, consequently decreasing strain on the heart.

Other Options: If these high blood pressure medications do not work, there are other choices available. Angiotensin II receptor blockers, calcium channel blockers and other drugs can be used when the more common hypertension medications do not work well by themselves or lead to undesirable side effects. It's very important that a patient and health care provider act together when going through the long list of hypertension medications to discover the ones that work the best in each particular circumstance. In some instances, a person will be fortunate enough to find the perfect medicine the first time. In other cases, it might take numerous tries to unearth the perfect therapy.

High blood pressure is a dangerous medical disorder that can have potentially life-threatening consequences if left untreated. Fortunately, there are many choices in high blood pressure medication to get the problem in check and minimize the risk of more critical problems. - 31820

Transcendental Meditation Naturally Reduces High Blood Pressure

By Christian Goodman

Anxiety, hypertension, depression and anger among at-risk college students can be effectively reduced my transcendental meditation. It is based on a study that is set to be published on December 2009 in American Journal of hypertension.

David Haaga, PhD, co-author of the study at American University, said, "The transcendental meditation program, a widely-used standardized program to reduce stress, showed significant decreases in blood pressure and improved mental health in young adults at risk for hypertension."

298 college students were made to participate in the study. They received instruction in transcendental meditation or were put on a wait list. The wait list acted as control group. 159 of the total 298 students were at risk of getting hypertension. Blood pressure, psychological distress, and coping abilities were measured at the beginning of the study and three months into the study by the researchers.

The students who practiced transcendental meditation had a reduction of 6.3 mm Hg high blood pressure and 4.0 Hg is low blood pressure. These reductions will help to reduce 52% the chance of getting hypertension in latter stage of life. At-risk students who practiced transcendental meditation showed very good improvement compared to the control group while measuring blood pressure, stress levels, and coping abilities.

Psychological stress and mental health conditions like anxiety and depression contribute to the development of high blood pressure, even in young adults. College students with blood pressure above the normal range are three times more likely to develop hypertension in later years. t was estimated by experts that' million students are suffering from mental health problems. Life is college is very hectic. Students should adapt themselves for rapid changes, social problems, pressure to succeed, financial strains, and uncertain futures (many of which probably seem gloomy considering the current economic crisis). Over the past decade there was an increase of 50% in diagnosis of depression and an increase of 100% in using medications for psychiatric problems.

Transcendental meditation is the best way to reduce stress as well as high blood pressure. And it also improve mental health. This was suggested in a recent study.

"This is the first randomized, controlled study to show in young adults at risk for hypertension reductions in blood pressure that were associated with changes in psychological distress and coping. Previous research has shown that psychological distress such as anxiety, depression, and anger contribute to the development of hypertension in young adults," said lead author Sanford Nidich, EdD, of the Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention at the Maharishi University of Management.

The grant for the research was funded by The Abramson Family Foundation, the David Lynch Foundation and the National Institutes of Health National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine

One third of adult population is U.S suffer from high blood pressure approximately. It is at an alarming rate that one out of three Americans. Prevent High Blood Pressure

By Christian Goodman

Blood pressure is called "hypertension" in the medical world. When your blood pressure is consistently above the ideal 120/80, you are generally considered "hypertensive". A high blood pressure is genetically predisposed in some individuals, but aside from genes, there are other factors that also contribute to it.

What is actually measured when your blood pressure is taken is the amount of pressure your blood is applying on the walls of the blood vessels. When the number is high then it automatically mean more blood is forced against those walls. You should know what hypertension really is in order to understand high blood pressure or hypertension.

When more water is stuffed into the balloon, it stretches the maximum out to fill in till certain point. When it gets to the maximum point the balloon starts thinning. And it will break when you put more water into it. This what happens when you fill more water into the balloon

when you allow your blood pressure to get high and if it stays there without checking. Your blood vessels will also suffer the same fate. They might also burst. If it happens to be a brain vessel then you might suffer a stroke. If it's a vessel that carries blood to the heart then you might have a heart attack. Where the burst happens in the blood vessel determines how severe it is.

With blood pressure will feel that you are very fine one day without any symptoms but the pressure increases suddenly that it gets life threatening the next day. Blood pressure is rightly called the Silent Killer.

The bottom number is called diastolic pressure. It measures the blood pressure when your heart is at rest and in between beats. The top number of blood pressure is called systolic pressure, which measures the pressure within the blood vessels as it pumps the blood out.

Of the two numbers, the bottom number is often seen as more critical. If your diastolic pressure is over the ideal number of 80, this means that extreme pressure is being exerted on your vessels, even when your heart is at rest. With high blood pressure, the spurting force of the blood as it leaves the heart the next time could be the one that proves to be too much.

What are the best ways to reduce your blood pressure. If you are overweight then it's suggested to lose weight. If you are very stressed then you can avoid stress. Stop smoking. And if you are idle for most of the time then exercise a lot.

your chances of heart attack or stroke is reduced by my hypertension program which reduces your blood pressure levels too. Best option and a very easier option is you can try my hypertension program. It is quicker and as effective as medications. Best thing about this no change of lifestyle and no need to sweat at gym

It is created with simple and easy exercise that you can do at ease. The result you get is life saving.
